for growing this special plant. The long growing season is blessed with days bathed in sunlight. The fertile soil has the optimum humidity, fed by snowmelt from the towering Andes.

José is just one of the local artisans who carries on the ancestral lifestyle. There is reverence in his work and respect for the simple wisdom that nature creates superior fibers, without the need for heavy equipment or chemicals.
"Why would I want to add anything to this?" he says, lightly stroking a swath of Pima fabric. "I can't improve perfection."
Hand-harvesting is the rule, because machines rip, tear, and damage the integrity of the delicate fibers. And machines can't tell the difference between a cotton boll that's ready for picking and one that needs another day or two on the plant.
